Our Organization bio
Amend is a grassroots nonprofit organization, based in New York City. We implement our childhood road traffic injury-prevention programs in Ghana and Tanzania, where we have offices. In Tanzania we are a registered NGO, Registration Number NGO/00003237.

Amend’s programmes focus on the neglected epidemic of childhood road traffic injury in Africa. Our focus is prevention: stopping injuries before they happen. Our work includes: primary school road safety instruction; advocacy for safer roads through hosting events such as to mark the United Nation’s Decade of Action for road safety and the World Health Organization’s World day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims as well as participation in the National Road Safety Week; the social marketing of reflector-enhanced schoolbags; identification of road safety improvement in the areas around schools; scientific research, and more. All of Amend's work is data-supported and measurable.

A brief description of our activity, Wednesday May 11, 2011 as part of the 2011 EU Week celebrations in Zanzibar
The event will involve the following activities:
• A procession by pupils and teachers from four primary schools in Zanzibar Town 08:00 to 12:00hrs as part of efforts to
raise road safety awareness among school children, teachers and their communities.
• At the central location pupils will be given road safety lessons by AMEND staff. Parents will be encouraged to assist in
these lessons, to give them the knowledge to then volunteer their time to assist pupils to cross roads at their
  children’s schools
• Pupils will then have a road safety quiz, with reflector-enhanced backpacks prizes awarded to winners

EUNIC TANZANIA CLUSTER
On Wednesday 9 February 2011 the Alliance Francaise, British Council and Goethe-Institut signed an agreement to form an EU National Institutes of Culture (EUNIC) group in Tanzania. The Director of British Council Tanzania has been nominated as the EUNIC Cluster president in its first year. The presidency will rotate every year.
Open Day
The three founder members of the Tanzania EUNIC cluster held an open day on Wednesday 9 February to mark the launch of the EUNIC cluster.
The Alliance Francaise hosted an exhibition on the culture of language.  This exhibition demonstrated the rich cultural resources of the English, French and German languages through audio, video and written presentations.

At the British Council the public were invited to take short “taster” language classes in English, French or German. These short classes were conducted by expert language teachers to give new learners an opportunity to experience what it would be like to study a European language.
The Goethe-Institut held a workshop for language teachers, which workshop provided an opportunity for teachers to discuss and share experiences of the challenges of teaching modern languages.  Sessions were held on techniques to encourage learnerparticipation, the European framework and the new technologies to support learning, including the use of interactive whiteboards.

Future events
The Tanzania cluster is currently working on a joint programme of events.  The first will be a poetry slam “Dar Slam” which will feature a series of regional slam events culminating in a national final in Dar es Salaam in September 2011.  The winner will attend the international slam on Réunion in October 2011.

What is Roots & Shoots?

Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation. Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light, they can break open brick walls. Imagine that the brick walls are all the problems we have inflicted on our planet. Hundreds of thousands of roots & shoots, hundreds of thousands of young people around the world, can break through these walls. We CAN change the world.       - Dr. Jane

The Roots & Shoots program is about making positive change happen—for our people, for animals and for the environment. With tens of thousands of young people in more than 120 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world. Young people identify problems in their communities and take action. Through service projects, youth-led campaigns and an interactive website, Roots & Shoots members are making a difference across the globe.

VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organization that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

VSO's high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all

VSO in Tanzania

VSO has been working in Tanzania since 1961. Our volunteers (about 80 international volunteers per year) work on both the mainland and the island of Zanzibar.  VSO’s works in Tanzania is focused on education, health and secure livelihoods. We also promote gender, disability and HIV/AIDS mainstreaming and support the development of local volunteerism movements.

Education
The abolishing of school fees, compulsory enrolment measures and the recruitment of additional teachers saw primary school registration in Tanzania increase from 59 per cent in 1990 to 80 per cent in 2002. However, despite increasing enrolment rates the quality of education remains weak; repetition by students is high, retention is poor and the pass rate for the primary learning exam is less than half.
Many teachers have minimal support and their salary is often insufficient and that affects their morale. Other issues include public expenditure constraints; slowness of educational reform; lack of skills needed for effective management and planning; poverty and lack of parental involvement in the education process. Volunteers working as teacher trainers, school development advisers and educational resource managers, are working to improve quality of education children receive by improving teaching methodology and resources, school governance and planning systems and the professional support teacher receive.

Health
VSO Tanzania supports the health sector by placing doctors, nurses, nurse trainers, counsellors and pharmacists in regional and district hospitals. Additionally, volunteers with management, fundraising or advocacy skills are working with local non-governmental organisations and local government authorities that are raising awareness of HIV and AIDS within local communities and supporting activities such as home-based care and local support groups.

Secure livelihoods
Many disadvantaged groups in Tanzania are prevented from earning a living because of issues such as limited employment options, poor environment for enterprise, little understanding of basic business development skills, and lack of specialist and technical skills in areas such as agriculture.
To ensure secure livelihoods for vulnerable groups, VSO volunteers are involved in:
§  The promotion of small to medium business enterprise;
§  Supporting vocational training and skills development in local trades;
§  Strengthening structures and networks of community-based organisations that are involved in economic development.

Activities for EU week of volunteerism
VSO international and national volunteers will actively participate to the EU week of volunteerism in May 2011.
VSO will mobilize its local partners to promote volunteerism in Zanzibar, Pemba, Mtwara, Lindi, Dodoma and Kagera. Our volunteers who currently placed in education institutions will notably promote volunteerism among young people.

Examples of current local volunteer actions:

HIV mainstreaming through volunteers: A local NGO group in Kibaya (Dodoma region) is running a series of workshops in the area and visiting primary schools to do all-day seminars on HIV Aids. They do this as volunteers and put so much energy /effort into it. Volunteering is certainly something not common in this area so it is particularly commendable.

Elderly support: SAWAKA is an organization in Kagera region that provides support to old people. It is mainly run by volunteers. VSO sent an volunteer management advisor there last year. Volunteerism became so popular in the region that an official Kagera Network for Volunteerism was created.
